Discovering Voices: Oracy and the Education of the Whole Child
In an era increasingly defined by test scores and measurable outcomes, the ability to speak, listen, and engage thoughtfully with others—skills developed through oracy—often receives less attention than it deserves. Yet oracy lies at the heart of educating the whole child. This talk explores the vital role of spoken language in developing not only cognitive skills but also emotional intelligence, empathy, and confidence.
Drawing on research, classroom practice, and the principles of character education and oracy pedagogy, this session will highlight how structured talk, dialogic teaching, and intentional oracy curricula support children’s academic achievement and personal growth. Attendees will be invited to consider oracy not as a “soft skill,” but as a foundational component of character formation and civic readiness. Practical strategies for embedding oracy in school culture will be shared, with a focus on creating inclusive environments where every child can find and use their voice. The talk will also cover how the English Speaking Union’s unique approach and initiatives support this critical aspect of education.
